If you’re a full time or part-time worker, it is very crucial to know how many work hours in a Year.

A couple of years ago, I learned two crucial things from my mentor and friend:

- If you want to get a handle on your money, you must know the number of hours you work in a month and in a year.
- If you want to develop yourself both professionally and personally, you must know the number of hours you don’t work in a year.

Interesting. Right?

This conversation with my mentor came up during my self-assessment, where I noticed the following:

- Even though I had a good job, I was going through a difficult month financially.
- I had worked for two years in my current job, but I hadn’t advanced myself professionally or personally: no new certificates and no new hobbies. I still lived in the same apartment even though I wanted to move.

That day, my mentor took me through a planning exercise that changed my life. He made me realize that when you know how many hours you need to work in a year, you will negotiate for your salary to get jobs that fit well within your budget.

You will also use any free time you have to advance yourself.

It’s a simple exercise, but believe me, it will give some new perspective on how you approach your work and personal life, and give you a better understanding of** how many work hours in a year.**

## Hours Worked in a Year 2022

We all agree that there re 52 weeks in year, and the full time emplyeer average woking hours per week is 40 hours.

From this, you can calculate the number of hours in a year, which is 40 hours multiply by 52 weeks which is equal to 2080 hours.

You can also calculate the number of working days in a year. That is 52 weeks multiply by 5 working days in a week, and that is 260 days.

**Weeks in a year is 52****Number of workigdays in a year is 260****Number of hours in a year is 2080**

NOTE:**52 weeks** in a year is an estimation, when you divide 365 day by 7, and that is 52.143, and for the leadp year, which is 366, it will be 52.286.

It means we may have more than 260 days in a year, and probably between 260 to 262.

We can calculate work hours every year, but as we are in 2022, we will take the current year as an example.

2022 has 365 days, 105 of which are weekends. This means 2022 has 260 working days and 2080 working hours.

(365-105) * 8hours/day= 2080 work hours.

However, to simplify this process, we’ll go with the standard accepted number of work hours globally, which is **2080 work hours.**

### Let look at the number of working hours in 2023

## What about paid time off?

Employees on a full-time contract usually get some perks such as paid sick days, leave days with pay and even paid maternity and paternity leave.

While paid leave is mandated by law in some countries, it is not in the US. It means that your employer may or may not offer paid leave. It’s up to you to negotiate for it. Otherwise, you’ll find yourself without a salary any time you intend to take time off.

According to a 2019 news piece by CBS, countries like Norway, Finland, Spain, and Sweden mandate a 25-day paid vacation leave. They also pay for public holidays.

Calculating work hours and wages is a lot easier in countries that offer paid leave and paid public holidays because everything remains the same.

If you are employed in the US, calculating your work hours can be more challenging because you can only plan your leave with your employer’s say-so.

## How do maternity and paternity leave affect your work hours?

Another factor you have to consider is the number of maternity and paternity days and whether your employer will pay for them.

Only 21% of employees have paid maternity or paternity leave in the US. Canada has a more generous maternity leave policy, but it also has some conditions: your job must be insurable, and you must have worked in that position for more than 600 hours.

Again, comparing these two examples, how you calculate your work hours will change depending on the maternity/paternity laws in place in your country.

## How does sick leave affect pay?

Things get even more complicated when it comes to sick leave. You cannot, after all, plan when you expect to be sick. But, even with that, you can still seek out an employer who accommodates paid sick days.

Note that in the US, every state legislates sick days differently, meaning it’s up to you to find out whether or not your employer is mandated by the laws of your state to pay you when you are off sick.

For example, Oregon’s laws entitle employees to 40 hours of paid sick leave a year. But an employee must first work a minimum of 240 hours to be allowed to those 40 hours. In New York, workers get between 20 and 80 hours of paid sick leave, depending on the size of the company.

This law may not apply to you if minimum wage laws do not cover you.

## How Many Actual Hours Do You Work Per Year?

Let’s assume that you are a full-time employee working in New York, entitled to 40 hours of paid sick leave, 10 paid public holidays, and no paid time off.

As I said, you cannot plan your sick days. But let’s assume you take ten days off in December. Also, let’s assume you are preparing for 30 workdays on maternity leave in September.

**Here’s what your earnings may look like in 2022:**

You will get paid for 2080 hours, minus any days off, minus any maternity leave.

**2080 hours – ((10 days off*8 hrs./day) + 30 work days maternity *8)) = 1760 work hours**.

## The table below is for 10 days off, 30 days maternity leave, and no paid time off.

By now, it’s pretty clear what would happen if you do not go into this much detail in your yearly financial planning or salary negotiations.

Notice how wages drastically drop in September and December. Those two months will be challenging months if you don’t anticipate them: You will probably fall behind on your wages, which could negatively impact your finances for months to come.

Your earnings may be affected in October as the maternity leave continues into that month.

In total, your annual income would reduce by $6400.

## Actual Hours Worked per year with Pay time off

Many full-time employees get paid during the holidays, pay time off and sick time.

Let assume that you recieve the following benefits:

- 10 paid holiday which is 80 hours
- PTO is 80 hours
- Sick leave, 7days,that is 56 hours.

The total worked hour ina year will be **2080 hours- 80-80-56 =1864 hours.**

From this data, it shows that you get paid for 2080 hours while you only worked for 1864 hours in a year.
